Top executives are among the most important decision-makers influencing the strategy and performance of their organizations. The series of EIASM Workshops in Top Management Teams and Business Strategy were initiated as a specialized and focused forum were researchers could engage in constructive discussions about the relationship among Top Management Teams and the ability of firms to strategically respond to the challenges they face, as well as finding new opportunities for research collaborations.
The first edition took place in Valencia (Spain) in March 2010, and it was chaired by Alejandro Escribá-Esteve (University of Valencia, Spain) and Alessandro Minichilli (Bocconi University, Italy). The second edition was hosted in Istanbul (Turkey) in March-April 2011, and was chaired by Sibel Yamak (Galatasaray University, Turkey), and Sabina Nielsen (Copenhagen Business School, Denmark). The third workshop took place in Milan (Italy) in June 2012, co-chaired by Alessandro Minichilli (Bocconi University, Italy) and Alejandro Escribá-Esteve (University of Valencia, Spain). As a consequence of the great success of these workshops we are convinced that the TMT & Business Strategy Research workshop is an excellent opportunity to develop and strengthen the research networks among scholars interested in these topics.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Top managers are considered the most influential actors in the firms’ strategic behavior, and a large body of research presents evidence for executive effects in different settings. Over the past decade a growing body of research has investigated the role of top management teams (TMTs) in an international context. For instance, strategy and strategic leadership scholars emphasize the role of TMT international experience as a valuable resource for dealing with the challenges of firm internationalization. Other researchers focus on nationality diversity of TMT members and argue that TMT members’ institutionally embedded experiences from their home countries can help improve firm performance in particular strategic settings. TMT research further recognizes that different types of institutions determine TMT composition and behavior. For instance, national culture may also impact managerial frames, attitudes and thinking, and history and national events may determine the character and way of acting of individuals. Moreover, research suggests that both formal and informal institutions shape managerial discretion.
At the same time, international business researchers pay close attention to differences in institutional environment and how such differences (between the home and host countries) influence firm strategic actions (such as entry mode choice, location choice, etc.). Yet this research has to a large extent neglected the role of management, that is, not firms but individuals make strategic decisions and thus, research needs to account for individual level characteristics/experiences that influence strategic actions in different institutional contexts. Only recently have research started to investigate how TMT characteristics influence firm internationalization choices.
The purpose of this workshop is to engage in discussions of the role of institutions in shaping executive effects in an international context. We are interested in papers that explore the role of institutions as it pertains to decision-makers, their firms, and the countries in which they operate. We are particularly interested in papers that deal with:
(1) How the institutional context in which executives are embedded shapes their values, cognitions and preferences;
(2) How TMTs manage international firms that face different institutional constraints and opportunities at home as well as in the host countries in which they operate.
The objectives of this workshop are threefold: (1) to analyze the state of the art on Top Management Teams & Strategy Research, paying special attention to international contexts; (2) to devise future avenues for research on this topic building on institutional theory; and (3) to generate opportunities for cross-border collaboration between TMT researchers. We encourage submission of papers that fall into one of the following domains:
1) Literature reviews and state-of-the-art papers, which will encourage the debate about the role of institutional and international context in top management team research and discuss theoretical and empirical challenges for future TMT research.
2) Conceptual papers that combine different and novel theoretical perspectives to explain TMTs characteristics and behaviors in an international context.
3) Empirical papers contextualizing different TMT research topics, such as: TMT dynamics and behavior; the role of institutions in shaping executives values and cognitions; interactions and power relations between TMTs in the home and host countries; international perspectives on executive compensation, turnover and succession, etc.
