BACKGROUND

We are pleased to announce that the 9TH INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ON “INTANGIBLES, INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL & EXTRA-FINANCIAL INFORMATION” will be hosted by Copenhagen Business School, between September 26-27, 2013. The chosen venue is particularly relevant as much of the groundbreaking work in intellectual capital has occurred in the Nordic Countries. In the late 1990s, a variety of research reports investigated what types of intellectual capital reporting was occurring. In 2001, the Danish Financial Statements Act required disclosure of intellectual assets for medium and large enterprises. Subsequent to the adoption of the Financial Statements Act, the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation published several reports pertaining to intellectual capital statements, one providing guidelines for the preparation of intellectual capital statements and one proposing a method of analysis.

This year’s workshop aims to combine theory and practice and to give a state-of-the-art overview of intellectual capital measurement and management. It will, therefore be focused on taking stock on the developments over the last decade and testimony on the progresses made in raising awareness, developing robust measurement and reporting methods, and helping organizations to better manage IC resources.

As part of stock taking, it is useful to consider the field’s theoretical status and ambitions. This includes attention to commonalities and differences in the field’s preferred types of theoretical arguments. Theoretical development has happened with increasing speed both from ‘within’ the field and from engaging with other fields. Resulting concerns about the status of the field should be illuminating for future progress.
