CALL FOR PAPERS

Expatriation has been the subject of an increasing amount of research and increasingly this is a field that is developing beyond its original narrow focus on those sent to other countries by major US multinational corporations. Just a few of these newer developments include:
  • A challenge to the notion of expatriation as entirely distinct and separate from migration
  • The development of attention onto expatriation from countries in the developing world rather than just North America, Europe, Japan and Australia
  • Exploration of those who are expatriated by organisations that are not MNCs – the public sector, the international public sector, non-governmental organisations, charities, etc
  • Examination of issues from the perspective of the expatriates and of their families
  • Examination of expatriation from the point of view of the local employees they work with or manage
  • Understanding of the role of self-initiated expatriates
  • Analysis of the role and issues created by short-term assignments, international commuters, frequent flyers and other non-standard ways of getting international experience
  • The ethics of expatriation

At the same time, there are deeper analyses being made of some of the traditional expatriation issues:
  • Cost-effective management strategies for IHRM
  • Effective management of the mix of forms of international experience available
  • A more comprehensive look at adjustment
  • Greater attention of the issue of expatriate performance
  • A focus on expatriate careers and what effect expatriation has on the long-term prospects for expatriates
  • More careful analyses of the forms and impact of expatriate reward packages

There are some developments too in the methods that are being used to address these issues:
  • The use of narrative
  • 360 degree views of expatriate performance

We invite scholars who would like to participate to submit Papers or Abstracts to EIASM. Papers should be of no more than 7500 words (including references). Abstracts should be of no more than 1000 words (including any references).
