Welcome to the seventh conference on performance measurement and management control. This bi-annual conference has become a reference event to be at the forefront of knowledge in these areas. In 2011 close to 200 scholars who presented and discussed more than 100 papers. As in other editions, some of the most relevant papers of the 2011 were published in a book by JAI Press (Elsevier Science). We expect to have a similar volume published in 2013.
The 2013 conference will meet in September as it has become traditional but in Barcelona. The conference promises to be again a forum to explore and exchange on current research, current corporate practice and future trends in research and practice of performance measurement and management control.
The two invited speakers will review existing research and present their most recent work on management control and performance measurement, particularly related to the 2013 theme: Performance Measurement and Management Control—Behavioral Implications and Human Actions
CALL FOR PAPERS - submission deadline over !! |
As in previous conferences, we invite papers using a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches on any topic related to the broad theme of performance measurement and management control. We are also encouraging submissions from all geographies of the world.
We also encourage submissions from a variety of people with the objective of having a conference where different points of view meet and create an environment for learning, innovation, and new projects. Therefore, we encourage submissions from researchers and practitioners at all levels from PhD students all the way to leading scholars and managers that provide guidance and experience. We also encourage submissions from all regions in the world because there are interesting developments in all of them.
The topic of this edition is behavioral implications and human actions associated with the use of performance measurement and management control systems. These systems do not work in a vacuum, rather they guide and motivate how people in organizations and markets behave. The intersection between management tools and human action is a central aspect in these research fields. Yet, multiple variables impact the result of certain designs on the behavior of people. These variables include issues such as national culture, organizational culture, strategy, technology, partnerships and joint ventures, and the presence of other management systems. The research questions at this intersection are numerous, consider for instance: why similar incentive systems have very different behavioral implications? How do multinational companies adapt their management systems to local environments? How do advances in psychology shape the way performance measurement and control systems are designed? What are the drivers of unwanted behavior? How can creativity and innovation be supported?
The intersection of performance measurement and management control systems and human behavior and actions affect many if not all the topics in these fields including:
Budgeting and, more generally, target setting
- Financial and non-financial) performance measurement and reporting
- Incentives and compensation systems
- Alternative measures of corporate performance, reflecting the evolving influence of multiple stakeholders
- Development and/or implementation of corporate strategy
- Performance evaluation of companies, business units, teams, and individuals
- Innovation and creativity
