Since the trend of globalization that burst on to the business scene, companies have become increasingly internationalized. A logical extension of this trend has been the increase in people who are working internationally (i.e., outside of their home country). A large number of academics in the international human resource management area have paid attention to this phenomenon, traditionally analysed under the heading of expatriate management. That is the subject of this workshop.
The field of expatriation studies is developing all the time and there are new topics and new approaches continually opening up. Recent developments have included work on repatriation, female expatriates, dual career couples, international career pathing and cost and risk assessment for expatriates. New topics include a awareness of self-initiated foreign experience, expatriation in the not for profit sector, amongst small companies, and in new countries and work is beginning on the alternatives to expatriation (short-term assignments; international commuting; frequent travellers; virtual teams; etc). New approaches to the topic include the use of narrative and the development of performance metrics. Proposals for papers are invited on these or any related topics in the general field of expatriation and international assignment.
The aim is to run this as a Workshop: numbers will be restricted in order to encourage participation and collegiate support. Researchers at all levels, from the very experienced to the new, are welcome.
It is intended that the best papers from this workshop will be published in the THUNDERBIRD INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS REVIEW
