BACKGROUND

What started in 2001 as a one-off workshop on performance measurement and management control has become a bi-annual conference gathering, in 2007, close to 200 scholars who presented and discussed more than 110 papers. Just as for the first 3 editions of the conference, some of the papers from the 2007 conference will appear in a book published by JAI Press (Elsevier Science) .

We will meet again in 2009 to continue to explore and exchange on current research, current corporate practice and future trends in research and practice of performance measurement and management control.

The two invited speakers will review existing research and present their most recent work on management control and performance measurement, particularly related to the theme of this 2009 edition: Innovative Concepts and Practices.

The first day (September 23) will be reserved for the presentations of early works and papers from emerging scholars in order to facilitate more discussions on them.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Research papers using a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches are invited on any topic related to the general theme of performance measurement and management control.

Of particular interest for this edition of the conference will be papers presenting and discussing innovative concepts and practices. The corporate environment is changing more rapidly than ever before: Competitive pressures are increasing and every industry’s clock speed is rising; technology is enabling the creation and transfer of an increasing amount of performance data; private equity is becoming more and more prevalent, modifying the incentives and the operating environment of an increasing number of managers. In response to these changes, what are companies doing differently these days? Are some of them (which ones?) developing new and innovative ways to tackle their performance measurement and management control challenges Which approaches seem to be most effective (under what conditions and subject to what enabling factors)?

These challenges, innovative concepts and practices are emerging in one or more of the following area:

• Budgeting and, more generally, target setting
• (Financial and non-financial) performance measurement and reporting
• Incentives and compensation systems
• Alternative measures of corporate performance, reflecting the evolving influence of multiple stakeholders
• Development and/or implementation of corporate strategy
• Performance evaluation of companies, business units, teams, and individuals
• Using the various levers of management control to change corporate culture - in a more performance-driven direction, or to create a more positive, “vibrant” environment.

Those who want to present a paper at the conference should submit an abstract (300 words),
no later than
January 31th, 2009

Complete papers will be required by June 15, 2009.

At authors’ request, papers will be considered for publication in a special volume of a major journal or book series

To be acceptable, proposals MUST only be submitted through this web site !!
