AIMS AND BACKGROUND

The university has been recently the object of large reform processes across Europe.

Rationales and operational features of these processes may vary from country to country. However, calls for reforms are always concerned with the allocation and use of resources required for research and teaching, the outcomes achieved and their dissemination and, generally, with the role that universities should play in the contemporary educational field. Universities, which traditionally played a key role in the formation of the ‘elites’ and the definition of knowledge, are nowadays increasingly challenged by the emergence of a series of new actors. Media and, broadly speaking, profit organization are playing an increasingly significant role in the production and storage of knowledge, providing both a language and a venue for knowledge interplay with application. The language of the reform has often drawn on categories borrowed from business studies and economics (such as quality and effectiveness), inserting the reform of the university in the broader trend toward the reform of public sector organisations which has characterised European economies in recent years.

Whereas there is an apparent agreement on the problems that the University is facing, much less is known on the how the translation of business concepts into institutions traditionally alien to them takes place. Even less is known in terms of the role of business studies in facilitating this translation and how this relates, enhances, or interferes with the mission of the university as producer of knowledge and provider of educational services.

This workshop aims to provide a forum to compare and discuss the various reform experiences that have characterised the recent history of this institution across Europe and beyond. Submitted papers should focus on, but by no limits be limited to, the following themes:

· Conditions which underpin the process of reform. Research in this area may range from economic based interpretations to sociological works which highlight the rhetorical aspects of the process of reform.

· Features of the reform in different European countries and comparative analyses. Research in this area may range from empirical and descriptive works to more speculative investigations which link the reform to the social, economical and pedagogical context or the differences between Eastern and Western European countries, or cross European analyses.

· Models of reform. Research in this area may address the reformers’ idea of university which underpins the various models proposed across Europe, its emergence and translation. It may also highlight the likely effects of these underpinnings on the institution and the process of change and stabilisation which concerns it. The existence of models of reforms inspired by economics, management or engineering and their effects on the university as institution are of particular interest for this workshop.

· Historical analyses. Research in this area may range from histories of the university as educational institution in different geographical contexts to the changing role that this institution has played in economies and societies.

· The role of European Universities. Research in this area may address the future of European educational institutions in a context where US American institutions have clearly taken the lead in many research areas.

· Business education. Research in this area may address the evolution of business education and its impact on the processes of change and reform of the educational institutions.

· Relevance for business and resource allocation. Research in this area may address issues concerning the allocation of resources to universities and other institutions to produce and disseminate theoretical and applied knowledge which is susceptible of business development in the medium and long term.
