After the sixteen previous Workshops (in Brussels 1987, Vienna 1988, Cologne 1989, Durham 1990, Vaxjo 1991, Barcelona 1992, Budapest 1993, Tampere 1994, Piacenza 1995, Brussels 1996, Mannheim 1997, Lyon 1998, London 1999, Prague 2000, Turku 2001 and Barcelona 2002) the RENT-2003 conference will take place in Lodz, Poland and will be hosted by the University of Lodz Development of European culture and economy poses increasingly new challenges before the science of entrepreneurship. Research on entrepreneurship and on small and medium-sized enterprises has to respond to a challenge of practice and seek answers to the most urgent problems, as well as follow the trend of the most important developments in the contemporary world economy. Development of the theory of entrepreneurship and studies of small business behaviour and economics should focus on satisfying these new needs of the European science and economy. Ideally this should be done in the context of the European Research Area (which is also the topic of the EU´s of the 6th Framework Programme) Similarly to the earlier conferences, RENT XVII also wants to address theoretical and practical interpretations of many other phenomena linked with entrepreneurship. RENT XVII in 2003 will be held at a historical moment of Europe’s development. The enlargement of the European Union with ten new countries, will create a new research task concerning opportunities and threats appearing in the field of entrepreneurship and connected with development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

At present, the city of Lodz counts 850,000 inhabitants and is the capital of Poland’s central region called the Administrative Province of Lodz. It is located 100 km to the west of Warsaw. For economists and, in particular, for scholars interested in development of the European industry and entrepreneurship, Lodz is an extremely interesting city. It was born almost 200 years on the crossroads of three empires : Russia, Austria and Prussia. During one hundred years, a little town grew into a large agglomeration. Production grew dramatically as well. Lodz is the only example of economic success at such scale in Europe. Nowadays, 17 universities and colleges, dozens of research units, scientific institutions, several thousands of qualified specialists and academic teachers, create an enormous potential. Each year Lodz hosts over 300 scientific conferences, and symposia, and provides courses for 80 thousand students. THE UNIVERSITY OF LODZ AND FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT : The University of Lodz is a young institution in comparison with other Polish universities. At present it educates over 40 thousand students in 25 major subject areas under didactic supervision of 2000 academic teachers, of whom 420 are professors. The Faculty of Management was formed in 1994 out of departments formerly being a part of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the Lodz University. Within not quite 8 years of its existence the Faculty witnessed a significant organisational development. Today the Faculty is composed of 9 Departments (including Department of Entrepreneurship and Industrial Policy). The Faculty is authorised to award doctoral degrees and higher doctoral degrees (habilitation). The Faculty’s development is confirmed by growing enrolment. Taking into account all forms and levels of studies the enrolment rose from 2 500 students to almost 3 500 students. A huge opportunity for its future development is the new building of the Management Faculty, where RENT 2003 will take place, with useful floor area of almost 16 000 square meters, with excellent modern equipped 60 classrooms and auditoriums.
