BACKGROUND

The European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) is an international network for management research and teaching that includes more than 50.000 management scientists from all over the world. EIASM’s mission is to enhance high quality in research and doctoral studies in management and related disciplines. The 19th annual EIASM Workshop on Family Firms Management Research is co-organized by the Esade Global Family Business Initiative at the Esade Entrepreneurship Institute and takes place in Barcelona, Spain. This event continues the tradition of successful academic gatherings that took place in Jönköping (2005, 2007 & 2012), Nice (2006), Naples (2008), Hasselt (2009), Barcelona, (2010), Witten (2011), Helsinki (2013), Bergamo (2014), Lyon (2015), Zwolle (2016), Bilbao (2017), Larnaca (2018), Nantes (2019), online with the support of the EuFBC Network (2021), Cork (2022) and Naples (2023). The workshop provides excellent opportunities for researchers to share their experiences, receive high-value feedback on each other’s work, and to form new research collaborations. The workshop is the ideal occasion for young scholars to present their ideas in a very competitive but, at the same time, informal context. Nonetheless, it fits also with established scholars who might find fertile ground in this workshop to stimulate academic debate and advance knowledge. The workshop consists of plenary sessions and research paper presentations, multiple social activities are also planned.

CALL FOR PAPERS

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the role of family businesses goes beyond mere economic contributions. Purpose-driven family businesses are increasingly recognized as vital agents of positive change, demonstrating a commitment to values, ethics, and social responsibility. As global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and ethical concerns come to the forefront, family businesses with a clear sense of purpose can act as beacons of responsible ownership. They possess the potential to influence not only their immediate stakeholders but also contribute meaningfully to the broader community. This conference aims to delve into the timely significance of nurturing responsible owners in purpose-driven family businesses, as these enterprises have the capacity to drive sustainable development and address pressing societal issues.
 
Furthermore, as family businesses transition across generations, the need for effective succession planning becomes paramount. The conference recognizes that instilling a sense of responsibility and purpose in future owners is essential for the continued success and impact of family enterprises. By fostering an environment that values ethics, sustainability, and social impact, family businesses can not only navigate the complexities of today's business environment but also position themselves as leaders in creating positive and lasting legacies. This conference provides a platform to explore strategies, share experiences, and collectively advance our understanding of how purpose-driven family businesses can play a pivotal role in shaping a more responsible and sustainable future.

- How do we navigate in a perma-crisis environment while maintaining the purpose? 
- What does purpose mean for the younger generations?

- Where do we develop purpose (e.g., family office, foundation, family business)?

- Purpose and Philanthropy
- How do we instill responsible ownership in family members?
- How do we connect responsible ownership and purpose?
- Which type of abilities/attitudes do responsible owners display?
- What type of meanings can we attach to responsible ownership?
 
While submission of papers related to the central theme, “Nurturing Responsible Owners in Purpose-Driven Business Families”, is particularly encouraged, the workshop continues its tradition to accept articles relevant to family firm management and add value to the development of the family business field in general, and to our understanding of drivers of different types of family business performance, in particular. For example, we welcome papers exploring the intersection between Family Business and Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Gender, Ethics, Sustainability, Innovation, Digitalization, Internationalization, Governance, Accounting, Control, Marketing, Practice, Emotions, HR, Careers.
 

DEADLINES

Deadline abstracts: June 25, 2024
Authors notification: between July 1 and 3, 2024
Registration for authors: August 12, 2024
Deadline final paper: September 2, 2024 

(Please note that only full papers submitted by then will be considered for the awards.)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Abstracts
 
Please submit your abstract only through the EIASM online submission system.

Note that the proposal have to be submitted online as ONE document
The proposal is composed by a cover page and the body of the proposal that consists of a 2 pages abstract (cover page not included). 
- the cover page should be a separate sheet including the following information: Title,  Each author’s name, his/her affiliation, address, telephone, e-mail. 
- the 2 page abstract should include: Purpose/topic of research, Research method, Theories used and Contribution of research.
All proposals should be single spaced, 11 point font, Times New Roman or similar.

After acceptance of the abstract, you will be invited to submit a final paper.
Final papers can be submitted in two formats:
- As a Full paper
- As a Work-in-progress (7-10 pages plus tables and references). 
 
 
Please submit a final paper by September 2, 2024 (only the initial submitter can upload the final version). See the uploading procedure below.

All final papers will be published on the workshop's website before, during and after the event and will ONLY be available to the workshops' officially registered participants.

For this last stage you can submit a full paper or a work-in-progress (7-10 pages plus tables and references).

  • go on the EIASM website (https://www.eiasm.net)
  • click on "Workshops & conferences / Event administration"
  • enter your login and password (in case you have forgotten one of these items, please follow the procedure indicated).
  •  at that stage, you will see that the final version of your paper is needed. Clicking on "details" enables you to upload it
  • In case the title is different from the title of the abstract you submitted, please modify it.
  • once it’s done, don't forget to click on the "SAVE" button.
