BACKGROUND

Top executives are among the most important decision-makers, influencing their organizations’ strategy, performance, and social impact. The series of EIASM Workshops on Top Management Teams and Business Strategy was initiated in 2010 as a specialized and focused forum for researchers to engage in constructive discussions on the relationship among Top Management Teams and the ability of firms to respond strategically to the challenges they face, and to find new opportunities for research collaboration. To date, the EIASM Workshops on Top Management Teams and Business Strategy have become renowned venues for strategic leadership research in Europe and beyond, and an excellent opportunity to strengthen the international research networks among scholars interested in strategic leadership.

This year’s workshop is special in that it celebrates the 40th anniversary of Hambrick and Mason’s (1984) foundational publication by joining with scholars from the field of organizational attention—celebrating more than a quarter of a century since Ocasio’s (1997) groundbreaking publication—and the research community focused on platforms and ecosystems and “post-Chandlerian” organizations. For this distinguished occasion, three hosts—the University of Passau, King's College London, and the German Research Foundation’s Research Training Group "Digital Platform Ecosystems"—together invite you to join an exceptionally distinguished group of keynote speakers and panelists in the beautiful city of Passau, Germany. The workshop promises a unique interdisciplinary series of panel discussions, paper presentations, and project pitches

PROGRAMME

The workshop will feature keynote speeches and panels involving our distinguished panelists, as well as paper discussion sessions and research idea pitches from emerging scholars. In the featured panel sessions, our panelists and keynote speakers will discuss important overarching challenges for strategic leadership and attention in post-Chandlerian organizations like ecosystems, platforms, and other innovative business structures as well as the implications of these challenges for research on Top Management Teams and the Attention-Based View.

In addition—against the backdrop of the beautiful historic city of Passau, at the intersection of the rivers Danube, Ilz, and Inn and the borders of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic—the workshop will offer plenty of networking opportunities for scholars interested in research at the nexus of strategic leadership, ABV, and platforms and ecosystems.

The program will begin on June 6, 2024, at around 9 AM and end on June 7 at around 5 PM. A welcome reception will take place on June 5, 2024, at 6:30 PM (participation is voluntary; registration is cordially requested).

CALL FOR PAPERS

“The scarce resource is not information; it is processing capacity to attend to information. Attention is the chief bottleneck in organizational activity, and the bottleneck becomes narrower and narrower as we move to the tops of organizations…” Herbert Simon (1973, p. 270)

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of Hambrick and Mason’s (1984) groundbreaking work on upper echelons theory (UET). It is also nearly 30 years since Ocasio (1997) introduced the attention-based view of the firm (ABV). The symbiotic relationship of these two streams of research has not only enriched each area of inquiry independently but has also facilitated rich cross-fertilization. Indeed, pioneered by Cho and Hambrick (2006), a burgeoning body of research has emerged that examines the dynamic interplay between top executives’ experiences, preferences, and dispositions, and attention structures within and around organizations.
