The co-chairs of the 30TH EIBA / EIASM JOHN H. DUNNING DOCTORAL TUTORIAL IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (2016) are:

The first objective of the John H. Dunning Doctoral Tutorial in International Business is to provide an opportunity for doctoral students in International Business (IB) to potentially discuss their research plans and works-in-progress with a distinguished international Faculty. A secondary purpose is to acquaint them with an international network of professionals linked to the IB field and EIBA. The core faculty of the Doctoral Tutorial is composed of leading scholars in International Business.

The number of student participants accepted for the annual Doctoral Tutorial is strictly limited to ten (as this EIBA doctoral event involves a considerable amount of faculty feedback and discussion; therefore, the current one-day format cannot accommodate more students). The doctoral thesis project with the most potential (as selected by the Faculty immediately following the event) is awarded the EIBA Best Doctoral Thesis Proposal in International Business Award, consisting of a certificate and money prize.

Students participating in the EIBA doctoral events (at no extra cost) are expected to also attend the main conference – and are required to register and pay for the respective EIBA Annual Conference. (Note that there are lower registration fees available for bona fide PhD student delegates.) The Doctoral Tutorial and Doctoral Symposium are closed and complimentary pre-conference events intended for fully-registered PhD student delegates who have previously applied for and been accepted to one of the EIBA doctoral events.

ATTENTION: Submissions not accepted for the Doctoral Tutorial may be considered for the Doctoral Symposium; however, there is no implied guarantee of acceptance for any doctoral or other event (i.e., the final decisions rest solely with the respective event organisers).

The 30th John H. Dunning Doctoral Tutorial (JHD-DT) in International Business for PhD students is being organized in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Conference of the European International Business Academy (EIBA), Vienna, Austria, December 2-4, 2016.

The 2016 JHD-DT will take place at the WU Vienna Institute for International Business (WU Vienna) on Friday, December 2, 2016, prior to the official opening session and welcome reception of the EIBA Annual Conference. The 2016 Doctoral Tutorial will be co-chaired by Jean-François Hennart and Gabriel R.G. Benito.

Students who are selected to participate in the JHD-DT will be requested to present a short paper about their thesis proposal – and required to submit an updated ten-page version of their thesis proposal by November 2, 2016 – according to the guidelines listed below. (Please note that all accepted students participating in this event must also be fully registered for the EIBA 2016 Vienna conference – this is a mandatory requirement.)

An award will be presented to the participating student with the most promising thesis proposal at the 2016 JHD-DT. (Click HERE to view the complete list of previous JHD-DT award winners.)

We are particularly keen to encourage applications from doctoral students who, although not yet being close to having completed their thesis, are already at an advanced stage and have developed a clear idea of the theories, methods, and data they will use (or are in the process of collecting) – and of their intended research design. That is, we welcome especially applications from doctoral candidates who are mid-way through their thesis. (Those in the early stages may be interested in applying for the EIBA Doctoral Symposium instead.) We also encourage applicants from schools that do not as yet have established IB faculty research groups.

As the number of students accepted for the JHD-DT is strictly limited, those interested in applying for this event are urged to send:

by September 1, 2016

• a three-page abstract of your doctoral project (Times Roman 12 font, single line spacing, 3-page limit including any figures or tables, excluding references)
• your CV in which you are kindly requested to mention:
  • the number of months (years) you have been working on your doctoral thesis
  • the name of your main thesis advisor

Applicants should divide their three-page abstracts into the following sections – in roughly the proportions shown below as a guideline:

1. the central research question addressed (to include a brief statement of the topic – the topic must clearly relate to international business – and of the issue or problem that motivates the research) [10%];
2. theory and literature review [20%];
3. research design, data, and methodology (to include hypotheses in the case of quantitative methods, and the methods of measurement and the generative questions that will guide grounded theory building in the case of those using qualitative methods) [30%];
4. expected results and summary of the evidence of the study thus far (to include if applicable an outline of any preliminary findings) [20%];
5. expected contribution and its significance to scholarship in the IB field [10%]; and
6. conclusions, and any remaining concerns or problems to be overcome [10%].

NOTE: If your thesis is made up of several papers, it may make sense to introduce the theme and then to focus on one of the papers so that you can provide sufficient details.

The submission deadline is September 1, 2016

Guidelines to participants of the Doctoral Tutorial for the preparation of their paper and presentation.
 
Papers should be a maximum of 10 pages (10 point Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing) (excluding bibliography). PowerPoint presentations for the Doctoral tutorial itself should consist of a maximum of 10 slides. We strongly advise students to divide their 10 pages and 10 slides into 6 mandatory sections as follows: (1) the central research question addressed (to include a brief statement of the topic, and of the issue or problem that motivates the research) [1 page or 1 slide]; (2) theory and literature review [2 pages or 2 slides]; (3) research design, qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods (rationale, data collection and analysis techniques) [3 pages or 3 slides]; (4) expected results and summary of the evidence of the study thus far (to include an outline of any preliminary findings if applicable) [2 pages or 2 slides]; (5) expected contribution and its significance to IB scholarship [1 page or 1 slide]; and (6) conclusions, and remaining concerns or problems to be overcome (to include any areas in which help would still be useful, and any questions for the faculty panel) [1 page or 1 slide].

The JHD Doctoral Tutorial 2016 will take place at the WU Vienna Institute for International Business (WU Vienna) - Room TC (Teaching Centre)  4.13.

- Dinner
