BACKGROUND AND CALL FOR PAPERS

This workshop is the third one held at EIASM concerning diversity issues of management and organizations. The two earlier were held in 2004 and 2007, and were focused on gender issues of organizations and entrepreneurship. The focus of this workshop is on aging workforce, with issues of gender as well.

Aging of workforce is a challenge for management and labor markets because people stay longer in work-life. Senior entrepreneurs appear and retired workforce work part-time and mixing of entrepreneurship and retirement also exist. In some cultures aging is respected and thought to bring wisdom, in some it is devalued. Western societies show ambivalence concerning the value of ageing employees. However, creativity and innovativeness develop through lifetime and also in later career. Aging of workforce leads to requirements to develop new work-life practices in organizations, at the level of HRM-policy, leadership and management. Management practices can support ageing of employees, if the multiplicity and non-deterministic character of ageing are understood.

Ageing is still most often seen from a chronological point of view even if the concept of age is multidimensional. The psychosocial or subjective age is based on the self and the social perception of age. Because there is a lot of variety among aging workforce, generalized stereotypes are simplistic. Concept of age is a socially constructed category. Women and men identify themselves in multiple categories where age is a crucial one. Both age and gender represent a deep structure because of taken-for-granted assumptions about appropriate and inappropriate behavior and status positions.

Ageing employees presents an issue for group dynamics, because the age structure in a growing number of organizations is increasingly polarized between young and aged. Therefore, there is a need to identify and meet the needs and preferences of younger employees as well, in order to raise cooperation and avoid the conflicts between different generations in organizations. Also very young entrepreneurs emerge.

In the workshop we focus on questions of aging in management and organization studies:

  • Careers and aging
  • Gender and aging
  • Senior entrepreneurs and self-employment at older age
  • Young entrepreneurs
  • Labor policy and aging
  • Aging HRM practices and policies
  • Generational knowledge and co-operation
  • National and cultural differences of aging workforce
  • Older workforce’s capacity as innovators
  • Social capital and aging
  • Diversity management of aging
