BACKGROUND

Previous workshops under the title “International Strategy and Cross-Cultural Management” were held 2002 in Växjö (Sweden), 2004 in Edinburgh (UK), 2005 in Vienna (Austria), 2006 in Toulouse (France), 2007 in Istanbul (Turkey), 2008 in Barcelona (Spain), 2009 in Helsinki (Finland), 2010 in Tübingen (Germany), 2011 in Moscow (Russia) and 2012 in Reykjavik (Iceland) and in 2013 under its new title “International Management” in Berlin, Germany.

OBJECTIVES

The workshop is intended to create a forum for scholarly exchange of empirical and conceptual research in international management. Given the workshop character, the number of participants is limited and, hence, a more intense exchange is possible compared to larger conferences. In addition, due to the developmental nature of the event, submissions do not need to be fully polished yet. Junior scholars and more experienced researchers alike have the opportunity to obtain collegial feedback, including from our keynote speakers who are of highest academic calibre. Furthermore, authors of papers which are already at a more advanced stage have the opportunity to be considered for a special issue which we usually publish from the workshops. A special issue with selected papers from this and the previous workshop will be published in European Journal of International Management.

In addition to the scholarly programme we also place a particular focus on the social aspects and events of the workshop, in order to stimulate informal exchanges among our participants. The social programme will already start Thursday afternoon and finish on Saturday, after the end of the academic programme.

The first ten workshops in this series were organised under the label “International Strategy and Cross-Cultural Management”. However, the workshop organisers decided to widen the scope of the workshop and, hence, relabelled the workshop as “International Management”. To distinguish ourselves from the wider area “International Business”, we focus on the organisation and its members and exclude macro-issues such as international trade, monetary policy etc. from the scope of the workshop.

The 12th Workshop on International Management will start on Friday, 24 October at 9AM and finish on Saturday, 25 October in the afternoon.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The workshop invites both empirical (quantitative and qualitative) and conceptual research in the area of international management. We seek in particular contributions on the strategic and behavioural aspects of international management. Consequently, submissions in international strategy, comparative and cross-cultural management and international HRM are most welcome. However, we also encourage submissions to other specialised areas of international management. We are particularly interested in papers that are interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary as well as papers that bridge theory and practice, as we like to stimulate dialogue, cross-fertilisation and integration across disciplines to address the complex issues in international management.

Recommended submission length
: around 20 pages double spaced, including references, tables and figures.

PhD students who submit a paper without the co-authorship of a more experienced scholar should indicate their PhD status as they are eligible for the best PhD student paper award.
