PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

The seminar has two objectives. The first objective is to broaden the participants’ knowledge and skills concerning various qualitative research approaches (e.g. case studies, ethnographic research, narrative inquiry, discursive research). The second objective is to help doctoral students in identifying the appropriate qualitative methodologies and methods for their own doctoral research projects.

Through theoretical readings, hands-on exercises, joint discussions and individual meetings the course will focus on issues such as: What types of research questions are suitable for various qualitative research approaches? How qualitative data can be analyzed and interpreted? How qualitative research processes can be designed, implemented, and reported in doctoral dissertations?

The seminar is built on action learning and hands-on-experience on how to do qualitative research. Therefore it consists of intensive small group work sessions and guided discussions as well as presentations made by the students. Interactive teaching draws from the student’s point of view, taking into account the participants’ prior expertise, knowledge and experience.

The seminar is targeted at doctoral students in the field of business research and disciplines close to this. It is designed particularly for doctoral students who use qualitative approaches in their own doctoral dissertation. It is suitable for students at the early stages of their doctoral studies although basic knowledge of qualitative research is required in order to be able to follow the seminar.

EVALUATION

Upon successful completion of the seminar (full attendance, assignments before and after the seminar), the participants will be given a certificate and granted 6 ECTS.
