PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

This EDEN Seminar will center on defining management accounting as a research domain. In addition to offering a foundation in the common issues that typically shape management accounting research, the seminar will place significant emphasis on understanding the wide range of research approaches used to study management accounting phenomena. A primary learning objective of the program is to develop an appreciation of how to design and conduct research that is credible, trustworthy and which makes a contribution theoretically and/or empirically to management accounting research.

This course will consist of:
Pre-class readings
Lectures
Discussions
Participant presentations
Post-class assignment

This seminar is proposed jointly with the 14th EIASM Conference on New Directions in Management Accounting.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This seminar is aimed at doctoral students or other researchers at an early stage of studying Management Accounting. Next to topical sessions on management accounting (career perspective, introductory to different methods, idea generation process), students also can pitch their research idea in small groups where they get feedback on their research ideas from faculty involved in the EDEN course.

EVALUATION & ECTS

Each participant is expected to keep a free-form learning diary covering the entire process from preparing for the course beforehand through the end of the course.

This EDEN course is deliberately timed to encourage active participation at the following conference. You should actively take advantage of this opportunity to develop and test your understanding of the issues raised as they play out in the presentations and discussions you will take part in during the conference.

Your learning diary should include a section specifically relating to this experience also.  The final section of the learning diary should address you developing understanding of the assigned readings in the weeks following the course.  A condensed version of the learning diary (about 1,000 words) is expected to be sent to setyar@eiasm.be by 14th January 2024. The learning diary should be divided into four sections: Learning Before the course, Main learning points during the course, Learning during the conference, and After the course.

Passing the course is subject to preparing thoroughly for the course, attending all sessions in an active participation mode, active participation with both your fellow attendees and other conference participants during the conference, and delivering the learning diary on time. The assigned credit for this will be 4 ECTS.
