BACKGROUND

While there is increasing emphasis on the development of specialised research skills and discipline-specific research expertise for doctoral students at business schools, there is surprisingly little, if any, formal teaching training tailored to doctoral students in a business school environment. This can often leave doctoral students at business schools unprepared and lacking confidence in the area.

This course aims to fill this training gap by offering a comprehensive, theoretically-informed and practically-grounded, course in developing teaching excellence for doctoral students at business schools.

PROGRAMME CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES

This theoretically-informed and highly practical course will cover, among others, the following themes:

  • Reflecting on teaching in terms of facilitating learning
  • Getting to know your audience – different learning styles
  • Stimulating learning and engaging students inside and outside the classroom
  • Practising teaching using different classroom scenarios
  • Appreciating challenges and the need to adapt when teaching
  • Giving and receiving constructive feedback in teaching situations
  • Setting balanced and effective assessments
  • (Re)designing a module – building blocks for success
  • Developing one’s teaching skills – confessions of (early) teaching experiences
  • Reflecting on the qualities of inspiring teaching

Participants completing this course will acquire the necessary pedagogical knowledge and skills that will enable them to pursue excellence in teaching.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Top business schools are seeking junior academics who can demonstrate both teaching and research excellence.

This course aims to equip junior faculty at business schools (doctoral candidates, post-doctoral fellows and new lecturers) with valuable teaching and pedagogical knowledge and skills, in order to be successful in their current and future academic teaching duties. Excellence in teaching is becoming an increasingly important factor for academic success, alongside research, especially in the current competitive academic job market. This practical course offers the opportunity to junior faculty, even with relatively little or no prior teaching experience, to reflect on learning and teaching, to gain useful practical knowledge and skills and to practise and share experiences in a safe environment with the help of expert faculty.

EVALUATION

Full attendance is required to obtain the certificate.
4 ECTS will be assigned upon completion of the seminar
